Stan has now put the finishing touches on the pages of the New Player Help Center. Corrections have been made and all the links now work. Thanks for that! So, any newcomers to the site reading this for the first time, the links to these pages can be found at Challenge Central, or HERE. You will find many good tips and a page where there are several volunteer established players willing to start games with new players. Also, if there are any established players that would like to register themselves by putting their name on the "Volunteer List to Play Newcomers", click HERE. You can do this by yourself. If there are any new players or volunteers that have questions, please post them in this thread. Thanks.....

Is there any notification that the game we are playing is with a newcomer? I have been signed up for awhile but don't know if I have ever played a game against someone because of it.
just noticed I'm listed as a "new member". Been awhile since I was called that! ;D

No - there is no indication like that. There is no way for me to know whether someone challeneged you because of the volunteer list or just out of the blue.
Of course, you can look at the opponents record at the site to see how new they are.

Of course, you can look at the opponents record at the site to see how new they are. That doesn't work either, Stan. Some who appear to be "new" to the site are not really new. They've just started another account, and in actual fact have been around a long time.

It might be a good idea to let us know some how. So we can roll out the welcome mat. I might be more vocal with someone new whos first game is against me because he went there and chose me.

The way I handle that is just welcome every unrated and provisional player that challenges me, or accepts my challenge from Challenge Central.
So, no matter how the game is started, I give them a welcome.

It tough Tork, because there are a few things that can happen:
- Someone can use their parents/brothers/sisters/cousins... e-mail account to sign up a new account, so I can't assume a duplicate e-mail address means a duplicate person. - When people have their e-mail address hidden, I can't really expose them. - Sometimes people sign up with a new e-mail address so I don't know that they have an account under a different e-mail address. IP Addresses don't help very much. They are rarely consistent during the same day, nevermind over weeks or months for a player. AOL users can have a different IP Address between the time they bring up a Game Page and the time they make a move on it.

Stan should we reject people who are not new if we ask for new players?

just for the information of everybody, 'beck15' and 'whatelseisthere' is the same person, only their playing strength may vary due to difference in amount of time dedicated to make a move..

I'd like to take this opportunity to not only thank all our past volunteers who have agreed to put themsleves on the list to play newcomers, but also the 19 players who have signed up since Feb 24th. I appreciate those who accepted my invitations and the newly applying players who I have accepted. It's certainly nice to see a variety of players of different playing strength on this list. If there are any other established players who still wish to apply, please click HERE. For players new to Stan's, reading this for the first time, please click HERE to find opponents for your first 25 games.
