Myself and pawnpusher47 have agreed in principle that this site could be revived by the introduction of a knockout tournament similar in vein to a football tounament like the English FA Cup.
In effect, either create a tournament in rating sections to get the first few rounds out of the way and then introduce the big guns later on. This could have the effect of many david and goliath contests.
Now what to do about format, ? Have 2 games, one as white, one as black with 3 day time forfeit.
Interesting?? If stan approves this, then perhaps we can all get together and find a way to get this become more than a suggestion and become a reality.

I'm very excited about Mick's proposal. There are lots of fun players here and the suggested format seems interesting enough. I'm in. I've recently (2 -1/2 yrs ago) returned and been enjoying the site as much as ever, perhaps more. I had let it take up far too much of my time. Now I don't allow that to happen.
One thing that puzzles me is the lack of regular subscribers. Not everyone has the resources, surely but I'm hoping more of the players who value Stan's will consider supporting this endeavor. Mick commented in a game we're playing that, 'he'd like to see Stan's return to what it had been in the past' (paraphrasing). I'm of the opinion that it will take more than this well intentioned effort and the requisite time spent in taking it to fruition, to make this happen. Personally I'm not all that disappointed with Stan's in its present state. I'm having fun but I must say I greatly missed that Scotsman, enough to follow him to another site for a while.
Those of you who are my friends and might be reading this, you could very well be shocked by my serious demeanor. For that I apologize! A word of warning, don't expect this on a regular basis. Best regards to all. Mitch

I'm fine with a tournament like this - the only thing is that it would have to be controlled manually by someone. I'd like to open up the site tourneys to everyone, but I have to have something special to offer subscribers.

Hi Stan.
You have tounaments on this site that have been open for "aeons" and are no where near ever starting. You could start deleting the ones that are unlikely to change, as for someone manually controlling a tournament like this, that would defeat the objectivity because it could be that 128 entries are received and the person could pit all the strong players together, if this was a tournament created by yourself, enough people know and trust you to make the rules fair and just. I know i dont have the time to run such a tournament, i dont know if anyone else has, but as the webmaster you could lay the foundation for such a tournament. I dont know, its a great idea in theory at least and as Mitch said, to get the site back to how it was would be fantastic/.

Ive been talking with players. pawnpusher47, big mitch, highbottom and alski11 about a round robin tournament, now ive had an idea of a "world series" of chess tournament, a tournament for countries, teams of 3 players. Its met with interest. and i have the means to create it from a webpage.

Hi Mickeypoll in regards to your suggestion of the possibility of tournaments of countries 'teams of 3 players', there is a previous thread regarding team tourneys which you may find interesting. Dated Feb 8 2006, created by Hal general board page 29 under Team Tournaments and also another thread created by Gritty dated Feb 13 2006 general board page 28 under Joining a Team. Having played in a 'Team tourney' there were various problems within the team structure. I hope it helps regards.....fllar
