We recently sent out a large number of invites. Most established players received 3 invites.
However, a huge number of the invites have neither been acepted or rejected. Do you believe that some people are unsure of what to do with the invite?

Savin I can't see there being a problem with people being unsure of what to do with the invites as it is pretty straight forward. The invite actually explains step by step what to do. By the way, thanks for the invites

Johnny5,
What is making me nervous can best be shown by the following stats for the Swiss Open:
768 Invites sent 310 Accepted 25 Declined 1 Withdrawn (accepted and then changed their mind) 440 Invites sitill unanswered
Some of the 440 are perhaps thinking about it, some may be on vacation ... but I bet a high number are either not even clicking on the invite link or clicking on it and not sure what to do next OR actually going to the registration page but not declining the invite....
But 440 is a large number to have still pending...

Maybe the reason is the somewhat confusing text: "If you wish to register, or if you were invited, or if you want to withdraw, then click on the Continue button below". I think many players think they don't need to do anything to decline.
To make things simple and very explicit you could consider something like;
"You have not yet accepted or declined the invitation to this tournament - please do so now" Below you have two options (buttons) - one that says "Accept invitation and Register in this tournament" - one that reads "Decline invitation".
Once people have accepted these should be another button reading "Withdraw from tournament".
...or something to that effect.

Savin
There are only 71 members of this message board so posting a message on here would not reach a big enough portion of the players in question.
Have the players who have not replied to the invites been active in recent months at Stans?
Is there any way of sending the players who have not replied a personal message that explains how to accept/decline the invites and how important it is to let you know one way or another?

This is the first time I've ever received a tournament invitation, AFAIK. I've read the descriptions of tournaments, and realized that some [non-automated] tournaments were available for non-subscribers, but I've never been successful at locating any of these tournaments. Sometimes, after I make a move, some kind of "news" page shows up, but the hyperlinks to the tournaments often don't work or lead to confusing documents (e.g. a tournament that seems moribund).
I believe that the high number of nonresponses are caused by the wording that sisyfos quoted: "If you wish to register, or if you were invited, or if you want to withdraw, then click on the Continue button below".
Non-subscribers are either unfamiliar with the fact that they can join tournaments at all (since the first time one naively tries to do so, one would usually get an error message that automated tourneys are only available to subscribers), and probably, like me, never received an invitation before. They probably expect it's rather like a CHALLENGE, and will self-expire in 30 days.

Comet,
If you receive an invite to a tournament through the Site Invitation Systems then you are allowed to enter the tournament. These special site invitations to tournaments appear on your player page in a yellow box.
You have the choice to ACCEPT the invitation or DECLINE the invitation. If you do nothing the message will stay on your screen. It will stay there until the tournament is CLOSED for REGISTRATION.
This means that you could just wait until the tournament closes and then the message will disappear. We were expecting that most people would prefer to have the message be removed after they have read it and this will only happen if you ACCEPT or DECLINE the invitation.
You are correct that invitations to site tournaments are normally restricted to subscribers. We in fact only run a few site tournaments a year that are open to non-subscribers. These are:
The Swiss Tournaments. Each active established player at the site recieves an invite to the Open Swiss and to the Swiss Tournament for their particular level. So this is two separate invites to two separate tournaments.
NetPlayer's Tournament. Again each qualified player gets an invite to this tournament.
Site Championship. The top 13 players at the site, or some alternates if some players decline, are invited to the site championship.
So most non-subscribers only get 3 invitations per year to Site Tournaments.
So that was the invites you recieved on your player page.
These invitations have nothing to do with subscribing and are NOT for subscribers only.
They are just Stan's thank you to the user base.
They take a lot of effort to organize and run. These tournaments take about 50-60 hours of mine and Stan's time to run and organize each year -- maybe more when you include questions and support to the players. So there is a limit to how many of these we can manage per year.
Hopefully this makes the intent a little clearer. Thanks for the feedback, it would seem we need to make the instructions a bit clearer.

Its a tricky move (replying to invites). I will put it off until my head feels clearer? (syndriome)
Not personal. If in doubt I make the move and to hell (usually) with the consequences. Some people are more cautious.

Do you believe that some people are unsure of what to do with the invite? No, I believe that overall people are just getting rude and ignoring the nicities that used to define polite society

Some of those outstanding have probably not even seen these invites if they are not going to their page to make moves. Some are going from the notification emails straight to the game.
