Back in the 60's and 70's I played a lot of PCC (Postal Correspondence Chess or Pre-Computer Chess! . Here is one of my favourite games. 1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 d6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 Nf6 5. Nc3 g6 6. f4 Nc6 7. Bb5 Bd7 8. Bxc6 Bxc6 9. e5 dxe5 10. fxe5 Ne4 11. Nxe4 Bxe4 12. O-O Qb6 13. c3 Rd8 14. Qe2 Bd5 15. Be3 a6 16. c4 Be6 17. c5 Qc7 18. Nxe6 fxe6 19. Qf3 Qxe5 20. Qf7+ Kd7 21. c6+ bxc6 22. Rad1+ Kc8 23. Rxd8+ Kxd8 24. Bb6+ Kc8 25. Qe8+ Kb7 26. Rc1 Qd6 27. Bc5 Up to this point, my opponent, Mr. P. Paskin playing white, has outplayed me. He now allows me a winning resource. What is blacks next move?

'A5': played in 1966 courtesy of 'Chess' magazine! A5 being the all-play-all group, and not a move suggestion!

As a further incentive I'll play anyone who can solve this ... without silicon! I'll offer a clue. The first move is NOT made by the queen!

I would play 27...Bg7 and expect 28.Qxe7+ Qxe7 29.Bxe7. Black is one pawn up but it's probably a draw anyway.
However, white's blunder was 24. Bb6+. If he'd played 24. Rd1+ he would've gained your queen and won the game.

Thank you for responding sisyfos. Of course you are quite right to point out 24. Rd1. White had a 'won game' well before that particular oversight. I'm sure you'll recall I (CB) did say that until the given position he had outplayed me! I can only assume he didn't play 28. Qxe7+ (best!) because having the roles reversed so suddenly he was unable to psychologically readjust to the fact that he had blown his won game! He actually played 28. Qxh8?? I responded 28. ... Qd2! He resigned a few moves later.

Hey, I played a few PCC tournaments around then. I've dug out A7 (71) and A8 (72), but I think there were more. Were you still playing there then?
Some good memories.
