Hello,
Is there a electronic computer gadget for recording chess games when playing over the Board instead of writing the moves down on paper?
At the moment I use Winboard on a laptop (but the laptop is playing up). This records in *.PGN.
Any mini-computer would need a USB connection to a computer or some other way of transferring the *.PGN files.

Couldn't find out what I want, but a useful link anyway! Links to suppliers and software.
In club competitions, do they still use paper to score? This is difficult for me as I have not got varifocal spectacles. Envisages, a mini-computer that is cheaper than varifocals.

This could give a player a bit of an edge if he was too tired or lazy to work out the moves for himself?

If you're thinking of USCF tournament games, most of those are run with "no computers allowed". I'm sure that would apply to any sort of hand-held. Otherwise try this: kantack.com/chess/chesstiger.htm

Not thinking of computer aids. That would be cheating! What I was thinking of was just writing down the moves correctly. e.g. like Winboard. I record using a laptop and Winboard which is satisfactory, except the laptop is on its last legs.

A new laptop might be required. Extract: Automatic Move Recording One of the nicest conveniences of playing chess on a desktop system is that nearly all PC programs nowadays automatically record your moves and allow you to save your game. Chess Tiger on the Palm, provides this capability as well. In fact, Chess Tiger always saves the current game automatically! No longer do you have to worry about making an error when recording a move or dragging pencil and paper along when wishing to record a game you're about to play. Via the Palm's "Memo" facility, games are recorded in .pgn format for easy importing into other chess programs.

I have got my laptop working, so I just record the moves when playing an oponent on a Board using the free program Winboard. I can only go wrong if somebody kicks the power lead off (the battery is kaput).
Like spell checking improves your spelling, this also helps to learn the new notation for old timers like me. It is quicker than writing the moves down, unless I am in time trouble.

Whatever happened to the old method of pen and paper?

Whatever happened to the old method of pen and paper? FIDE regulations seem to demand this. I have an eysight problem that makes this awkward for me.
