Last night, I noticed that your host, SmartHosting, was down (along with this site, of course) for at least 4 hours (7pm-11pm Pacific Time).
Any idea if this was a planned maintenance /upgrade thing, or an unexpected outage for whatever reason?

Reyn,
My logs show activity in every minute yesterday. There was no outage. I don't know why you couldn't get to the site. It must be some kind of routing issue. I don't know if the problem is with your internet provider, or just the path between your area and the datacenter where you are.

Thanks Stan for the quick reply.
I know for sure that it wasn't my host, Shaw Cable, as I was visiting other sites.
I went to the SmartHosting site last night and I kept getting the dreaded "white page". So, I figured the problem orginated with them.
But, if you're saying that there was no outage, wouldn't it have to be an major hub somewhere near the host then that was causing the problem?
I was able to get to the message board without difficulty, by the way.
Odd, quite odd. Anyone else have any problems last night?

Reyn,
Outages from one area to another can happen. At work recently we started getting complaints from users that couldn't get to our website. We didn't see any trouble with it, and many people we checked with didn't have any trouble, but there was definitely a problem for people in one region of the country that were having trouble connecting to the site. It turned out that a major router/hub in some datacenter (not the stansco datacenter) was having trouble and it was eventually fixed.
It might have been one of the routers/hubs in "my" datacenter that had trouble that night? I don't know. I'm not a hardware guy, so I don't know how all of the network stuff works in those big datacenters.
Sorry for the inconvenience. Please let me know whenever you do see outages like that. It is especially helpful to know whether or not smarthosting.com is also unavailable when my site isn't.

Thanks Stan for that bit of info.
So far, the few folks that I've asked here said it wasn't a problem for themselves.
On the night of that outage, the first thing I did was to go to SmartHosting, and they were definitely down (for me). The odd thing about it was that sporadically, their homepage did come back for short periods of time, but not your site.
So, again a matter of data not getting to the right /all places.
The problem is that it's easy to forget that the internet is only a big series of connections, and if any one of them has a problem, you're not going to get where you want to go.
That is also a problem for the end user, because they don't know who to talk to. Usually, it's the site that gets the blame, but may never be them.
Everythings been humming along quite good since then. A few slow sessions, but again, probably a routing thing.
<sigh>

6:15 GMT (UT) am and the main Stansco site has gone down from England. There have been lot of temporary (a few minutes) site unavailibility before, but this is the first time I have encountered a prolonged absence.
From time to time this seems to happen on all web pages, my own included. It was still down at 6:25 am.
Still down at 6:55 am.
Back up at 7:08 am.
