How many pieces and pawns is a Queen worth? www.stansco.com/cgi-bin/nc_game.cgi?356520?10b??largeNo hints as the game is not finished. General comments and other examples please. What is the psychological impact of losing your Queen? I have seen games OTB where a Queen sacrificed for two Rooks was the edge that won the game! And early one for me when returning to chess after a 20 year break a pawn, bishop and rook was not good enough compensation, not when the opponents rooks were working together.

Depends on the situation a bit. I've happily sacrificed a Q for 2 R's when 2 points behind, simply because the extra pressure I could exert with my 2 Rooks gave me a reasonable chance of forcing home one of my passed pawns. www.stansco.com/cgi-bin/nc_game.cgi?315135?28b??large

Three minor pieces is OK compensation for a Queen. 2 Bishops and a Knight for a Queen is a little better than 2 Knights and a Bishop for a Queen. The real challenge, especially with lower rated players, is that a queen is a lot easy to move that 3 minor pieces. Because of this I might say that a Queen will tend to beat 3 minor pieces on a complex board if the players are rated under 1600 (new rating system).
For instance, with two bishops and a knight one of the bishops is always not protected, except by the King. So a queen and King versus 2 x bishops, knight and King might lead to a victory for the Queen. The worse case is a draw for players rated under 1600. Why? Well the Queen takes a Bishop and ... how many players rated under 1600 can mate with knight bishop king against king? (without a computer to help!!)

It probably lost him the game. This was unlikely to be sound play over the Board? Probably sound pyschologically for the particular opponent.
