I'm really curious to know if there is any point to people hiding their ratings? Under this rating system the only way to find out an opponents strength is to look at their rating. I know that under the new rating system people are put into category's that they cannot change but surely with this system, each of us should be able to see everyones rating, so as to determine the quality of the opponent

In my case you cant determine my rating, I let my Grandson play a few games. Im teaching Him the game. I think a hidden rating is neat. You either beat a person or you dont, ratings shouldn't matter, just play your best and what will be will be.

Johnny5,
Under the old rating system there were some reasons to hide ratings. An example would be someone who got sick or had to leave the site and mass forfeited tons of games would have a very low rating.
The conept of a hidden rating in the new rating system is a little more tricky. As you said, its an indication of players playing strength. Stan and I talked about eventually allowing people to play "unrated games." We even discussed only using results from within tournaments for ratings.
in the new rating system there is really no such thing as a hidden rating. In the long run if we have players that really still want to hide their ratings I think we will add the option for a player to "opt out" of the rating system. This will mean all games against them have no impact on the ratings and they never get a rating and they are barred from almost all tournaments.

Thats not really a good idea in my opinion. Like I said I let other people play some games on my site, so the rating that is posted at my sites aren't an accurate account of my chess ability. No matter what a persons rating is doesn't really matter as long as this is JUST an internet site, who really cares. ITS JUST FUN to play.

You're right, it is just fun but to improve your chess ability it's better to chose your opponent by the strength of the game you require. I am trying to improve my chess skills and to win very easily or to lose without even getting started doesnt help my improvement.

I respect your opinion. I guess I was just trying to convey that you can never really be sure of ones true rating.

I'm really curious to know if there is any point to people hiding their ratings? I initially chose to hide rating since I was about to leave the site a while back and I didn't want to seem active. I also didn’t want to be on the official top100 lists since I was soon to be inactive. When I returned to play again I expected my rating to be inaccurate due to the high number of forfeits, thus I keep my rating hidden. Other players can still learn my rating though, by consulting the New Rating list. By the way, the New Rating doesn’t penalize your rating for forfeits as much as the old rating did – and generally it’s much more accurate so I advice people to use this list in any case.
